Unique network

BlueChem is the beating heart of a unique business network and innovative ecosystem with a clear focus on open innovation in sustainable chemistry.

BlueChem is deeply embedded in a knowledge cluster of research and development in sustainable chemistry. The incubator operates within the network of the spearhead cluster CATALISTI, the innovation platform for the chemical and plastics industry, with the support of the Government of Flanders. This guarantees a direct connection with all five Flemish universities and renowned research centres such as VITO, Centexbel and the Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant. The proximity of Blue_App, an initiative of the University of Antwerp to group all research projects on sustainable chemistry under one roof, also reinforces the mutual exchange of knowledge and innovative strength.

One of BlueChem’s major assets is its central position within an international business network in the largest and most diverse chemical cluster in Europe, where twelve of the fifteen largest chemical companies in the world have a production facility. More than a hundred chemical companies and companies from related sectors are directly involved in the CATALISTI spearhead cluster as innovation partners. Many chemical and plastics companies have also developed major R&D centres in Flanders.

This unique and closely intertwined network will enable BlueChem to develop into a global reference as a breeding ground for pioneering innovations in sustainable chemistry. BlueChem must become an international showcase for cutting-edge R&D where the research projects of start-ups, spin-offs, small and large companies can grow until they are ready for industrial production.

BlueChem wants to build an ecosystem that stimulates and encourages open innovation:

  • Between large companies, SMEs, growth companies and starters
  • Between the private sector, government and academia
  • Between all links in the value chain: from basic chemistry to plastics, pharmaceuticals and biotech
